Working Women are the Cause for Unemployment in India, Says Class 10 Textbook

There’s a popular quote that goes “If you educate a man you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman you educate a family (nation).” But clearly, the education system has missed this, because according to them, ‘women are contributing to the rise of unemployment among the men of the country’.

Wait What?

Yup, you heard right, there’s a chapter in the Social Science textbook of class 10, published by the Chhattisgarh Board of Secondary Education, which explains that unemployment has increased in India after independence, because women have begun working in all sectors.

It has even listed out the causes of rising unemployment in the country.

This vile matter was first brought to notice by Soumya Garg, a teacher in Jashpur district. She sent a letter to the Chhattisgarh Women’s Commission contending that the chapter is discriminatory. The commission responded to it and said that there will be some action taken soon.

Well, that might bring a few changes, but imagine the damage this could have already done. Thousands of children have already been taught this. Who knows what kind of impression it will leave behind?

Any working woman in India can tell you that once she decides to get a job, she’s already prepared for the trials that lie ahead. Balancing family and work life is just the tip of an iceberg. Working in a man’s world means constantly proving herself, battling sexism and keeping herself safe against the evil that lurks around.

Maybe the education board should add that to textbooks under a chapter on ‘what the education system isn’t telling you about women empowerment’.
