The one thing we hope for Indians in 2016 is a more liberal society especially for women. And by women we don’t mean only the urban, independent women who make their way through a comfy lifestyle to protest the odds. We wish more power for the rural Indian women, as well, who has more societal pressure even in today’s times.

Today, we read about a widow in Bihar who was stopped from cooking mid-day meals for kids, thereby restricting her from earning a livelihood. In Kalyanpur village of Bihar people have protested against a widow Sunita Kuwar, who cooks food for kids in a school. Apparently, a mob attacked the village shouting slogans that led to a lock-down. People have threatened dire consequences if Sunita is allowed to cook but the courageous woman is seeking help from the district magistrate in order to resume work.

“I am being victimised as I am a widow. I have to look after my two minor children. I am fighting my battle alone and running from one office to another to get justice for the past 21 months,” she told The Telegraph.

Sunita is fighting hard to get back her right to earn a living and says, “If the local administration fails to deliver justice, I will go to the chief minister’s janata darbar in the Capital.”

Sunita has two little kids to take care of and thus needs to resume work at the earliest, but has become a victim of superstitions and social stigma.
