It’s no less than a nightmare for any parent to discover that their child has been sexually abused, and it only gets worse when they learn that the predator has been a family member or someone from their social circle. Across the world, not a day passes without a child sexual abuse case being reported. In the case of India, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that India has now started reporting these cases, acknowledging them and creating awareness. The bad news is that the cases are rising rapidly. In its 2013 report India’s Hell Holes: Child Sexual Assault in Juvenile Justice Homes, the Asian Centre for Human Rights said that sexual offences against children in India have reached epidemic proportion.
Now, sexual abuse doesn’t only mean rape, it could be other milder forms of molestation such as forcibly kissing.
This short film, Enough Secrets, by Ashima Theatre Group, shows that parents may never know enough, even though they think they are watching over the movements of their children. The abuser can be in the family and you will never know until, like in this case, a random conversation happens with your child, in which he/she casually mentions it.
