Indian women might not be getting the recognition they deserve but they surely are making their mark. We say this not just as a sweeping statement, but with proof of another Indian woman who’s achieved incredible success and broken gender barriers.
Acclaimed women scientist Soumya Swaminathan has taken over as the Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Surprisingly, Soumya also happens to be only the second woman to have ever progressed to this position in the 100-year history of IMCR.
Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, who will now head 32 research centres under ICMR, is known for her ground-breaking work in research for Tuberculosis and has also previously headed the National Institutes of Research in Tuberculosis in Chennai.
Soumya has specialised in Paediatric Pulmonology and is the second woman on the coveted post of Director General of ICMR after Dr. Gowdagere Satyavati.
In her three-year term as the head of ICMR, Dr. Swaminathan plans to make healthcare more affordable by improving the infrastructure of medical facilities.
We are extremely proud of Dr. Soumya Swaminathan’s achievements and wish her all the best for her term at ICMR.
