This is the first time ever a woman has been named as Time magazine’s Person of the Year since 1986, and she is on the cover of their next edition. Her work towards resolving Greek debt and her dedication towards encouraging countries to open their borders for immigrants and refugees made her climb up the ladder to be titled as Time’s Person of the Year.

Since 1986, there has been no woman who has been titled as the Person of the Year, for the prestigious magazine. In fact, Markel is the only fourth woman to have been awarded with this title. This comes as a great surprise that after so many years a woman has gained this prestigious title. As per The Guardian, in 2011, a group of women – Cynthia Cooper of Worldcom, Coleen Rowley of the FBI and Sherron Watkins from Enron – represented whistleblowers, were crowned Persons of the Year. But we are excited because this shows the rise of a woman, all by herself.

We are indeed glad that 2015 will end on a great note as Angela Merkel has created history by being named the Person of the year. We hope more such women get appreciated for their exceptional work and are applauded globally.
