Pick up any of the latest women’s magazines and chances are that they’ll be filled with ads promising you either a better figure or a better complexion. While we all cringe and occasional make a remark about the distastefulness of it all, two feminist groups in New York City have decided that enough is enough.
National Women’s Liberation and Redstocking have created ‘This Oppresses Women’ stickers meant to shut down sexist ads in the city. The stickers are being put up on all obnoxious ads that talk about the perfect beach body, butt enhancements and breast augmentation.
“Women are sick of being bombarded with advertisements that depict women only as sexual objects… Women are fighting back and using (the This Oppresses Women) vintage sticker to do it,” said Erin Mahoney of National Women’s Liberation.
We for one are loving this. In a country that thrives on associating fair skin with success and shames women for having a healthy body figure, we are so in need of such a feminist movement. Take a look at some ads in NY city with these stickers. We hope someone takes inspiration and creates such a kickass movement in India too.
