There’s a new kind of artwork now in town. It’s funny, it’s got vintage value and it leaves you thinking things over. And we are not talking about the film, Messenger of God (MSG). As you all know, web comics have become fairly popular these days and the new crop of web comics involves taking vintage artwork, turning them into comics and throwing in some witty dialogues on current affairs, women’s issues and existential questions. Rajesh Rajamani is one such artist who set to work on Ravi Varma’s paintings to churn out web comic strips on current affairs, which are posted on his Facebook page, Inedible India. The page name, a satirical take on Incredible India should give you an idea of what his artwork is like.
Giving him stiff competition is Aarthi Parthasarathy, founder of Royal Existentials (also on FB) who combines traditional imagery with social commentary. Aarthi, however, leans more towards Indian miniature paintings, many of them depicting a scene from the Mughal era.
Regardless of the school of art involved, both types of comic strips are funny and definitely shareable. Take a look at some of them.
