Our country is just like our TV shows. With so many ups and downs, vamps and villains trying to destroy the peace of the common folk, the drama is never-ending just like in our daily soaps. Illustrator Maitri Dore has come up with illustrations that speak of the unlawful things done in this country on a daily basis. You will love the sarcasm.

“For these women, heterosexuality is like a death sentence. ?The law does not permit homosexual relations and the penis becomes a noose around their necks, killing them both physically and in spirit.” – Maitri Dore

“Being stuffed into the metaphorical closet is akin to having no identity and no means of escape. This illustration is an attempt to capture the claustrophobia and bleakness that characterises the mental space of individuals who are trapped by the strictures of society.” – Maitri Dore

“It captures the ancient Indian marriage custom of the ‘swayamwara’ (practice of choosing one’s husband from a pool of suitors), and turns it on its head. The attempt is to show that in an egalitarian society, Sita’s choices for partner would be quite diverse and the ‘Rama’yana (ancient Hindu epic) would probably never have been.” – Maitri Dore

“Men whose body types and sexual orientations do not conform to society’s notions of perfection, are no less super.” – Maitri Dore

“This illustration shows that mud as a building material, solar energy for heating purposes and the use of waste water for gardening and growing one’s own crops go a long way in ensuring self-sustenance and security.” – Maitri Dore

Marital rape in India is no crime at all. Sad!

This illustration refers to the Pink Chaddi Campaign that was launched as a peaceful protest in 2009, when right-wing leader Pramod Muthalik of the Sri Ram Sena threatened to marry off couples seen together on Valentine’s Day.
