2015 has been a milestone year for the transgender community. Finally recognised as the third gender, the transgender community also got a honorific, Mx. We are happy that India is moving ahead, creating new chapters of pride.
In a bid to further empower the transgender community, the Odisha government has decided to implement five sub schemes, which will be looked after by the newly created Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD).
The schemes also include a loan of Rs. 5 lakhs if someone wants to start a business. The scheme has terms for pension as well, which offer a sum of Rs.1000 per month post retirement.
The All-Odisha Eunuch Association (AOEA), which has been fighting for the rights of the transgender community for a very long time, revelled after the government made these changes.
Finally the transgender community which has been looked down upon for decades will now live a dignified life, in Odisha. We applaud the government for this major milestone.
