Student Denied Internship Abroad! When Did the World Start to See All Indian Men As Rapists?

For the past two years, any conversation with foreigners about India is sure to include rape. Given the number of rape cases that are being reported since the Nirbhaya episode, it comes as no surprise that India, today, is rapidly earning the sobriquet as the rape capital of the world. But even then, we never thought that every Indian male will be looked down upon because of the country he belongs to. Or that he would have to bear the brunt of the actions of a few indian men.

An Indian male applied for an internship at the Institute of Biochemistry at Leipzig University. But the Professor Annette G. Beck-Sickinger replied back saying “Unfortunately I don’t accept any Indian male students for internships. We hear a lot about the rape problem in India which I cannot support. I have many female friends in my group, so I think this attitude is something I cannot support”. Such an attitude sure is shocking.

While the social media is buzzing with the discrimination, many believe that something like this is just not possible and claimed that it was nothing but a hoax. The Huffpost India team got in touch with professor to find out the real story. And the story checked out be true! Turns out that the professor actually thinks that the Indian student can raise havoc in the class.

When the student protested about being treated unfairly, she responded further, calling India a country of rapes which demonstrates the country’s attitude towards women. She further added “Many female professors in Germany have decided to no longer accept male students for these reasons, and currently other European female association are joining. Of course we cannot change or influence the Indian society, but only take our consequences here in Europe.”

How do we put a stop to situations like this? If we don’t talk about rapes and create awareness, they won’t stop and if we talk too much about it, then Indian men will be looked down upon in every country.

Showing his outrage Michael Steiner, Germany’s ambassador to India has sent a mail to Professor Beck-Sickinger which has been uploaded on the German Embassy in India website.”I would encourage you to learn more about this diverse, dynamic and fascinating country and the many welcoming and open-minded people of India so that you could correct a simplistic image, which – in my opinion – is particularly unsuitable for a professor and teacher.” Steiner wrote.

Not every Indian man is a rapist. Just because he is from a country that has seen many cases of rape, how can society or any individual for that matter call him one? This appalling behaviour of the professor has done nothing but show how educated she really is.
