A 60-year-old woman in Tripura was tied to a pole, beaten and had her head shaved off. The reason: she allegedly had an affair with another man in the village.
Anjali Bhil, a resident of Ujan Chandrapur village was branded as ‘characterless’ after an allegation of her illicit affair with another man in her village. Villagers proclaim that she had been given several ‘warnings’ before they had to forcefully take her outside and attack her.
She was rushed to a hospital by her neighbour. Following a police complaint, seven people have been arrested.
Such incidents of social humiliation, however, don’t come as a surprise to either the people or police in Tripura. In July, a woman was stripped, had half of her hair shaved off and was beaten severely while tied to an electric pole. Her crime was similar; having an affair with a married man.
What’s more shocking about these incidents is that women themselves are part of the social policing. In the case of the latter, three women were identified as part of the mob.
