When was the last time you revamped your home? Those outdated lace curtains, the threadbare upholstery and the boring coffee table are screaming “makeover!” in your face. Since it’s about time you gave your home a facelift, how about doing it the right way? Well, the Quirk Studio girls, Shivani Ajmera and Disha Bhavsar seem to have all the answers. The duo that specialises in interior styling believe that a “serious punch of eccentricity and quirkiness” is a must for every space. In an interview with iDiva.com, the Shivani and Disha talk about their venture, festive makeovers and their ideal home.

What exactly is interior styling and how is it different from interior design?

Interior Designing is to create the entire interior structure of a space, including the walls, ceiling, lighting, plumbing, etc. Interior styling, on the other hand, is curating in order to give the space a certain look, add the finishing touches and make it complete. Style is the way you express the design; it’s design that creates different types of styles.

How did you both come together to set up Quirk Studio? Tell us the story behind the name.
We both met at a publication house where we worked together for a while and got to know each other. We found that we had very similar interests, tastes and passions. The name literally came to us as it defines our style and us. We love design that is edgy and out of the box; basically, we don’t like to play safe.

What is the USP of the brand and the services you provide?
While there are some fantastic architects and interior designers in the country, there is a visible gap in the industry for interior stylists. People are only slowly realising the importance of stylists. Our USP is that we both are certified interior designers, we have had experience working as designers and stylists both, which gives us an edge over most, and there’s two of us!

What are your own design sensibilities?
Our style is graphic, clean and straight lines. We like working with neutrals such as greys and beiges and adding a punch of colour and of course, we love dabbling with the latest trends and styles. We strictly follow the motto of ‘less is more’.

Tell us a little bit about your ideal home.
I’m sure our ideal home won’t be exactly the same. However, we would love a home with high ceilings, with plenty of large windows filtering natural light. Grey and neutral walls, chevron rugs or chairs, beautiful artwork (some black and white) with influences of industrial and rustic chic styles.

What are five easy ways to give your home a festive makeover?

First things first; to start a perfect makeover, de-clutter!

1. Adding fresh flowers to a space can bring a certain amount of freshness and magic to it instantly.
2. Re-arrange your furniture and make the space look entirely different.
3. Re-upholster with new fabrics, curtains and sheers.
4. Create an accent wall by simply painting or wallpapering it.
5. Adding some artwork on it can completely change the look of the room.

What are your plans to establish and expand Quirk Studio?
We are still extremely young and nascent; we are hoping that people understand the need and further recognise that we exist to fulfil that need. We obviously hope with time and experience that we can grow bigger in size and also in the kind of work we do.

Who is the Quirk Studio client?
We’ve worked with Portico New York, Josmo Studio, Beekalene Fabrics, BoConcept, Deltin Group and Valcucine, as well as several architects and private clients.

When you both aren’t at work, what would we find you doing?
While we both pursue different hobbies, we enjoy reading, music, theatre, exploring the city and of course travelling, looking for new things and getting inspired!
