It’s not every day that we see a woman stand up for her rights, especially against an influential man. But Rima Karaki, a Lebanese TV presenter who works for the Al-Jadeed channel dared to do the unthinkable.
Rima courageously cut short an interview with a Sunni Muslim scholar, Hani Al-Seba’i. Rima was interviewing the scholar live on her show. She wanted to know his views on Christians joining the ISIS in the Middle East. This topic apparently evoked rage in London-based scholar who continued to talk about a completely different topic.
The Sunni Muslim Scholar gave an extremely rude reply to Rima, who politely asked him to stick to the topic. The sexist scholar did not take this lightly and asked Rima to shut up. Rima’s reaction to this is awe-inspiring for every woman who always dreams of standing up for herself, but does not actually end up doing it.
Rima simply cut short the interview with a stern message for every other woman – a bold move that’s being praised by every netizen and twitteratti.
“Either there is mutual respect, or the conversation is over,” said the TV presenter who immediately disconnected Al-Seba’i.
On one hand, it’s only been two days into the international women’s week and we’ve been going all out to create a more respectful environment for women. On the other hand, we have men like Al-Seba’i who actually believed that it was beneath him to be interviewed by a woman, one of those men who do not consider women as equals and encourages that kind of behaviour towards the other sex.
All Rima wanted him to do is focus on the topic at hand while Dr. Al-Seba’i continued his rant.
Twiterraties went all out praising Rima for her brave move. Here’s what some of them had to say:
“there is either mutual respect or this conversation is over”. YES. SO MUCH YES. #InternationalWomensDay #RimaKaraki
