The Uber cab rape case has shook the nation and rightly so! However all that I can see, as I sift through #Uber is panel discussion, opinion pieces and stupid government laws banning the taxi instead of the rapist! Seriously does this really help? Getting a few panelists on board and talking about the issue or just criticising and blaming officials for a few days and then moving on to the next news isn’t helping any woman! After all we are the country which took 200 years to realize that we need independence. Shouldn’t we start making stronger laws already?!
However amongst all of the Uber rape case opinions I found something that really made me smile. Because we are too stupid to understand one simple fact that no women will voluntarily ask for rape, Ram Devineni has created a comic Priya’s Shakti, which is just too perfect. The story is about a rape survivor who eventually turns into a super hero. The story is an amalgamation of mythology, the stereotypical culture of India and the dreadful story of a rape victim. The writer, who was a part of the protest in Delhi during the Nirbhaya rape case credits his inspiration to the regressively Indian mentality. He told BBC, “I was talking to a police officer when he said something that I found very surprising. He said ‘no good girl walks alone at night.” That’s where it all actually starts. It’s in the Indian genes to believe that a girl should not walk alone at night, a girl should not travel in bus at night, a girl should not go to deserted mill in day broad light, and so on and so forth!
After reading the comic I just had one thought in my mind. While the superhero in the comic is fictitious, we can be our own Superheroes. Read the comic book here and make sure you share this to show your support for #CreepFreeIndia.
