There’s a valid reason for Indians to rejoice this AM. The Indian women’s chess team has won over Poland with a remarkable performance of 3.5 – 0.5. The strong Polish team that was outstanding in the World Women’s Championship lost against India in the eight and penultimate round. Woot!

The tournament that took place in Chengdu, China had seen India in the sixth position of the championship that has 10 other women’s teams from around the world. This much-needed win has pushed India to the fourth position that we will be able to keep unless we are unable to hold up against Armenia in the last round.

India’s ace chess player Dronavalli Harika who had previously backed out of the championship, drew on the second board in this match while Koneru Humpy took over with a remarkable win against Monica Socko from the opposition.

Indian chess grand masters Dronavalli Harika and Padmini Rout along with former World Junior Girls Champion Soumya Swaminathan and twice National Champion Mary Ann Gomes make a powerful team that’s geared up to take on their rivals from around the world.

The camaraderie of team players Koenru Humpy and D Harika deserves to be praised as it’s worked wonders for the Indian team who look pretty positive.

The team, however, will have to be careful of arch rival and host China as well as Russia, Armenia and Georgia, which have been the strongest teams in the competition so far. Other competing teams are Egypt, Poland, USA and Kazakhstan.

India’s chances now rely on its three best players – Humpy, Harika and Padmini and luckily they all look in form for the next match.

We are looking forward to more good news for Indians ahead of the World Women’s Chess Championship.
