What’s the first thing you hear when you hear the word, intern? Someone who runs around fetching coffee and photocopying important documents, but doesn’t get paid a dime, well almost nothing. We have all had those days, right? But if you are lucky and have landed an internship which makes you very happy and you are doing just the kind of work that your CV needed, then chances are you have found your dream work place. Make sure you don’t let it go. Here are ways you can turn your internship into a job and excel at it.

Act the part: Act as if you already belong here. Strictly adhere to the dressing rules of your workplace. Maintain a professional relationship with everyone there and make sure that you don’t act over-emotional or childish.

Network: Once you are acquainted with everyone, make sure that you talk to your colleagues and build friendships. That doesn’t mean that you get over friendly. But make sure that you leave an impression. If tomorrow they are looking to hire someone, you should be the first one to pop up in their heads.

Ask questions: Don’t feel shy about asking questions or clearing your doubts. If you don’t know something go ahead and confirm it, otherwise you might end up making mistakes and there will be a heavy price to pay. Asking questions will also help you learn a lot of new things which will help you elevate your knowledge.

Set goals: Talk to your mentor and ask him/her to set goals for you. Make sure you excel at those goals and try to overachieve wherever possible. Impressing your manager is something which can lead to a job offer at the end of the internship.

Help out: Whenever your manager is asking for help, make sure you raise your hand. Help him out because that will help you learn. Make sure you don’t shy away from work and finish everything on time. You should also try to help people in other departments other than yours because that will help you learn the kind of work they do.

Follow these rules and you will have a job in no time!
