A newly wed woman was tortured by her in-laws for not bringing dowry with her, to their home. Her hands were forcibly burned by dipping them in boiling oil. And her husband and sisters-in-law caused her much agony for a paltry sum of Rs 10,000.
The woman, Karuna Waghmare, has been admitted to a hospital in Beed, a small town in Maharashtra, the Press Trust of India news agency reports.
“They beat me for not bringing 10,000 rupees from my parents,” she told reporters in the hospital. “My husband forcibly put one hand in boiling oil and my sisters-in-law poured boiling oil on my other hand.”
A police official said told PTI, “We have deputed our team to take a statement of the woman and other relatives.”
However, no arrests have been made so far, the police added.
Earlier in April, a man in Charsadda gunned down his former fiancee and nine of her relatives, the police said, six months after murdering his own parents and two brothers for refusing to pay his dowry.
