Indian economy in doldrums: The country’s sliding rupee fell to a record low at 64 to a dollar in August this year, dampening outbound travel from India.

IPL spot-fixing scam: The much-publicised Indian Premier League witnessed a dirty twist with Delhi police arresting three cricketers, Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, of the Rajasthan Royals, on charges of spot-fixing.

Nina Davuluri wins Miss America: Twenty-four-year-old Nina Davuluri created history by becoming the first Miss America of Indian descent in September. However, her victory led to some hateful comments on Twitter from users who were upset that someone of Indian origin had won the pageant.

Sanjay Dutt goes to jail: Munnabhai surrendered and went to jail, ending the 20-year-long battle that saw him charged with illegal arms possession in the 1993 Bombay blasts.

Mumbai photojournalist gang-raped: In August, a 22-year-old photojournalist in Mumbai was gang-raped and dumped in an abandoned mill compound. The incident gave rise to questions concerning the safety of women, and reminded us of the horrific gang-rape and murder of a Delhi girl last year.
