The office space has a certain sacredness, after all this is what gets you bread and butter. Often, we have to work with people, who may not be like-minded. Following office etiquettes is an absolute must. Anyone who’s worked in an office long enough knows that there are some things you just don’t say to your boss, or in a meeting with your coworkers. Every word or thought that you share in this professional space reflects your professionalism, competence and dedication. It can either get you a pay rise or it can raise a red flag. Here are 12 phrases that you should never say in your office, amidst your seniors and colleagues.
1. That’s not my job: No matter how hard you have worked, this one line can kill the whole impression. If someone asks for your help, be humble and help. Don’t be arrogant and selfish.
2. I can’t do anything about it: You have been hired to do a certain work and yes you are expected to fix problems.
3. It was your work…you should have: Do not pick on your colleagues, it can leave you all alone.
4. It’s not fair: Let’s face it, the world is not a fair place to be in and nor is your office. If you have an issue, speak to your immediate boss and get it sorted.
5. I am too busy for this: Everyone is busy with their work. If you utter the busy word, it makes the other person look insignificant. Avoid this one.
6. I can only try: With this one line, you just made yourself look like a failure. Always be proactive and up for a challenge. Learn to be a team player.
7. She/he is so sexy! This one can get you in trouble as it sounds like a sexual innuendo. If you don’t want eve-teasing charges against you, you better not utter this line.
8. I don’t believe in him/her: This can be argued as gossip and can get you in trouble.
9. I don’t give a damn: This makes you sound like an arrogant employee, who doesn’t care about the company or the work assigned. If you are heard saying this, you can expect a pink slip on your desk.
10. It was always done this way: This will make you sound too rigid and unwilling to move ahead with changing times. Do you want to be known for this?
