DIY: Concrete Candle Holders for Holi

Sometimes it is just irritating to see all the construction work around. But looking at all the extra, of-no-use concrete lying around, I had this brainwave. I decided to do something positive about it: make some pretty candle stands. Perfect to add colour to your décor with Holi around the corner.

Things you need:

1. Concrete: it’s a mix of cement, sand and gravel. You can pick some up from a nearby construction site.
2. Some plastic glasses and plastic caps smaller in diameter to the glass. (These form the cavity to hold the candles.)
3. Acrylic paint and brush
4. Some disposable plastic containers to mix concrete
5. Cello tape to create patterns

Method:

Spread generous amount of newspaper to cover your workspace.

1. Add approximately a glass of water to the concrete and mix well. If you feel the water is less, pour little water at a time. As you add water, start mixing.

2. Pour the mixture into the plastic glasses till it reaches the height you require. Now insert the smaller plastic caps in the center. Put some coins into it to hold the caps down.

Leave the glasses untouched for 24hrs for the concrete to dry completely.

3. After 24 hours, pull out the plastic caps gently. Now neatly cut the glass with the help of a craft cutter. Cut the glasses as shown in the image. Once done, slowly remove the cups made of concrete.

4. Once out of the plastic glass, they will look light grey in colour. Decide which area you want to color and apply cello tape to create a line. If the top edges look rough, smooth them with some sandpaper.

5. Let the paint dry for about an hour and if required apply a second coat of paint.

I personally love this DIY as it helps to transform something so grunge like concrete into something really beautiful.
