Consent. This is a highly discussed word in India. Considering the fact that our rape numbers are fast increasing, we really need to understand the true meaning of the word. While in essence our society knows that sex should only follow consent, the problem arises because we cannot properly comprehend the concept of consent.
We consider everything from wearing short clothes, to drinking at bars, to having male friends to talking to boys as consent. We use these very loose guidelines to then, defend the rapist, rather than the victim, and invariably start the rape cycle all over again.
Well, honestly consent is very simple. In fact it’s as simple as offering someone a cup of tea – if they say yes, they want the tea and if they say no, they don’t want the tea. The fact that they are wearing a short dress, with vodka in their hand surrounded by a bunch of boys, at 2 AM in the night simply doesn’t matter.
