Every woman dreams of the perfect wedding. From her dress to the location, she can define everything in minute details. The most important thing is the way she envisions herself as a bride. Apart from her dress, her make up on D-day is what will make her look like a million bucks. If you are, or aspire to become a make up artist, be sure to take your job seriously as you won’t just be making a bride look good, rather you’ll be making her dream come true.
Here are a list of 10 tips which every bridal make up artist should consider.
1. Be an apprentice: Being a make up artist is all about being passionate about your work. Working under a professional will help you learn the technical aspects of make up and help you pick important pointers. Do a certified course from a well-known make up institute.
Adel Katherine, renowned make up artist says, “You need to learn the rules before you know how to break them. So getting your basics right is very important. Videos teach a lot but when it’s your profession at stake, personal help is always recommended.”
2. Practice makes perfect: Before you go out and start your own business, practice your make up skills on friends and family. This will give you the confidence for the job, allow you to experiment and learn about each complexion and skin type.
3. Networking is important: Networking is very important to build contacts, especially when you initially start your business. Connect with events, party and wedding planners to build your business. Advertise in local newspaper, provide brochures at hair salons and trendy boutiques to connect with new customers.
4. You need to look good: As a makeup artist, it is important for you to look like one. Dress well when you meet your clients. Create a personality that matches your creative profession. People might judge you and your work just by your appearance.
Adel Katherine says, “A make-up artist should also suit up and appear well-dressed. Nobody will want a shabby looking person to dress them up.”
5. Build a website: In the world of technology, websites are the easiest way to connect with your customers. Create a cool and customer-friendly website which portrays your work. Upload pictures of your brides and how well they liked your work.
Namrata Soni, famed celebrity make-up artists say, “Word of mouth is the best way to promote yourself. Your work should speak for itself. Use the internet to promote your work by creating a website where you can display your work.”
6. Discounts attract all: If you have just started your business, discounts can be one way to attract customers. Give discounts to your customers or provide them with complementary packages during the festive seasons.
7. Meet your client: Before deciding to paint that face, make sure you meet your client well in advance and understand what she wants. Take a look at her dress, inquire about the venue and guests and match colours with her complexion.
Namrata Soni suggests, “Always meet the bride before you prepare a bridal look for her. Ask her what she likes and how she would like to look on her wedding day. It is essential to know what will make her feel special.”
8. It’s her day, not yours: Your client can throw tantrums, she’s the bride after all! Be patient and let her have her say. Do not get annoyed, rather make her feel comfortable. She will have a picture in mind of how she wants to look like, and it’s your job to fulfill her dreams.
Adel Katherine adds to the point. “Patience is the most important character a good bridal make up artist should possess. You will be dealing with a girl on the most important day of her life. She is allowed to throw tantrums and make a fuss and expect to look no less than a movie star.”
9. Be creative: It not necessary to stick to the routine. Try to be creative in your work. Take necessary tips from fashion magazines, make up workshops, and YouTube videos. There are no set rules for make up.
10. Make a Portfolio : Seeing is believing. A portfolio plays an important role in building your brand. Create a portfolio, which contains high-resolution images of the brides, you’ve worked with. Share these with details about your experience and skill to prospective clients.
