The sanskari memes of Alok Nath may soon do a volte face, with a different kind of content being uploaded. Alok Nath, the sanskaari man now suddenly finds himself being quite unpopular with the young junta after he made a particularly un-sanskaari comment on Sunday night.

The saga that ended the sanskaari man’s run of popularity began when Modi launched the #SelfieWithDaughter campaign, which trended on Twitter, with daddies happily posting pictures with their little girls. Women’s rights activist and columnist, Kavita Krishnan struck a discordant note in the selfie fest with her tweet about ‘stalking daughters’.

The tweet was a veiled reference to the two-year-old political scandal dubbed ‘Snoopgate’, when Modi’s close aide Amit Shah (now president of Bharatiya Janata Party) allegedly put a woman under surveillance using illegal methods under Modi’s orders.

Now Kavita may have good cause to feel bitter, but perhaps her tweet was ill-timed or could have been worded better. In any case, some people agreed with her sentiments, while the pro-Modi camp on Twitter rose up in scorn against her. While the kind of gendered abuse they hurled at her negates any happy #selfiewithdaughters posts, it also caused Alok Nath to respond in this way.

Alok Nath’s tweet got much more attention from the Twitter junta than Kavita’s tweet itself, with people taking him to task for using un-sanskaari and sexist language against a woman on a public forum. Subsequently, the tweet was deleted. But the Internet continues to rage against the sanskaari anyway. Here are some responses to his tweet.
