Having been a rider for approximately eight years now, I have had people give me the weirdest reactions. At times they are so funny, that writing about them now only makes me laugh. I have had women stare with envy, men with fright and jerks in a way that shouts out, “accident in the making”. But I have managed to take these reactions in my stride and enjoy my bike rides amidst the little laughs that I have to myself at some of the odd reactions I receive. If you are a rider too, here are some of the reactions you too must have gotten sometime during your bike riding journey.
The stares: Some men will stare you up and down as if you’re a creature from space that has accidentally lined up right next to them on the signal.
The curses: If after years of safe riding I meet with a road accident due to someone else’s fault, all the ‘Boys’ will be like, “Women and riding! Accidents are bound to happen. Vehicles weren’t made for The Ladies!”
So it’s okay for them to have a fall every week but I can’t have a genuine accident even once in a lifetime. So much for gender equality, Thank you!
The helps: And once in a while you’ll meet the over enthusiastic helpers who want to get out of their way and help you park because obviously they think you are no good. Seriously guys I think I can make my own space without the interference and judging.
The eve teasers: Yes, even on a two wheeler, some men just don’t stop with the livid remarks. They pass some or the other comment to make the lady rider conscious.

The over confident ones: The ones who think, “Really, are you that strong? You know how to balance right? Okay, wait let me get through and you can take your time. Slow and steady.”
I just want to punch them in the face and zoom away in my slow and steady pace.
The speeders: Some boys will be boys and all they want to do is speed up and win the race. So they will zoom away from right next to you, shaking you up and pulling you down along with a whistle and a hustle. Just one word – Losers!
The Scared Aunties: Some aunties will dread the ride, but will want it because well it’ll make life easier for them. So pat comes their reaction, “You ride? How long have you been doing so? Are you sure you can take my weight. Please don’t make me fall dear.”
Why you don’t just cab it up, I am thinking.
The ones who are always ready for a lift: There are some who think having a bike means having all the fun in the world and dropping them from one place to another is the only job we have. So their all time favourite question will be “Can you drop me to this place?”
Of course they never consider things like petrol, signals, one ways and traffic.
