Fashion designer Masaba, who dabbled in acting with Masaba Masaba, and did a fairly good job at it, is all set to star in an upcoming series, ‘Modern Love: Mumbai’. In her latest interview, she expressed her thoughts on love and society, and what being modern means to her. Masaba said that not much has changed ever since she was born as women who have kids out of wedlock still have to deal with “whispers and people talking behind their backs”.

I have been tagged too modern for being born out of wedlock: Masaba

Masaba is the daughter of actress Neena Gupta and Sir Vivian Richards who is born out of wedlock. In an interview with The Indian Express, Masaba was asked if she ever had to face the brunt of being ‘modern’.

“All the time, my mother was called a modern woman. When she made Saans, it was called modern, and ahead of time. I have been tagged too modern for being born out of wedlock. Honestly, it’s wonderful to be modern but there’s no size that fits everyone. I think the responsibility of being modern is to be accepting, however, we have become more intolerant. I think we are going back in time,” she said.

Masaba says she doesn’t have the guts to have a baby out of wedlock

Masaba goes on to share that accepting is one thing, but that doesn’t stop people from whispering or talking behind their back. “Accepting is one thing but what happens behind the scenes is something else. You would pass comments like that she slept with someone and had a baby. I read stories of so many single moms who have had kids out of wedlock. They do have to deal with whispers and people talking behind their backs. Nothing has changed with time,” Masaba said.

She further explained, “Being a modern woman, do I have the guts to have a baby out of wedlock? Never. I don’t want to take that extra pressure, and put a child in that space.”

When Neena Gupta talked about raising her daughter as a single mother

Veteran actress Neena Gupta raised Masaba all by herself. In an old interview with Times Now, Neena had said, “I had confidence that I won’t ask for my money or anything else. Mai kuch na kuch kar lugi. Mujhe koi kaam karne mei sharam nahi hai, ye meri maa se maine seekha. Mai jhadu laga lugi, mai bartan maanjh lugi, lekin mai maangugi nahi, isiliye mujhe wo confidence tha.”
