In the heart of Ahmedabad, where the aroma of coffee mingles with the spirit of acceptance, Vishwa Pallav Srivastava and Vivek Patel’s love story unfolds like a modern-day romance, challenging societal norms and rewriting the narrative on same-sex relationships. Their journey from a chance meeting to becoming life partners is a testament to the power of authenticity, resilience, and unconditional acceptance.
In an intimate conversation with iDiva, the couple shares insights into their relationship, discussing how they navigate societal expectations and judgments.
A love story that brewed over coffee and Ted Talks
Their story began in May 2016 at a café in Ahmedabad, where Vishwa and Vivek first connected through a gay dating app. Their initial encounter blossomed into a series of heart-to-heart conversations, with their first date culminating in an unconventional night of coffee, conversations, and TED Talks on feminist porn at Vishwa’s apartment.
Meeting a total of 10 times in a span of six months, their connection deepened, leading them to the realisation that they wanted to be together. Vivek, breaking the conventional norm, confessed his love, and Vishwa, embracing the spirit of the unexpected, was the one to propose.
The right person
Vivek, having no previous relationships, found something special in Vishwa that made him believe he was the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Vishwa, reflecting on his past relationships, noted that what set Vivek apart was the absence of judgment. Vivek’s ability to accept him for who he truly was, combined with shared laughter and unconditional acceptance, solidified the bond that would become their unique love story.
Communication is the mantra to resolve conflicts
For Vishwa, accustomed to companionship since the age of 19 through various relationships, merging his life with Vivek’s required a delicate balance. Both partners actively communicate and set clear expectations, ensuring that individual boundaries are respected. Their mantra revolves around open communication and a shared understanding of each other’s needs.
While the couple doesn’t adhere to a strict rulebook for resolving conflicts, they believe in active listening, communicating calmly, and reminding themselves of the ultimate goal they share. Laughter has played a pivotal role in their relationship, and they prioritise expressing their thoughts and feelings while addressing issues at hand.
Evolving notions of love
Meeting each other challenged societal norms and stereotypes, leading Vishwa and Vivek to evolve their notions of love. Their journey showcases that love transcends gender and becomes more inclusive, accepting, and profound as they navigate life together.
The most liberating aspect of finding each other, according to Vishwa and Vivek, was discovering a sanctuary where they could be unapologetically themselves. Their love became a source of strength, allowing them to stand against societal expectations and judgment.
Vishwa and Vivek’s relationship shatters the myth that love is exclusive to heterosexual couples. They emphasise that love is universal, irrespective of gender, and same-sex couples are fully capable of creating strong, lasting bonds.
Overcoming hurdles
Vivek faced the challenge of temporarily leaving his family, and it took three years for them to accept his relationship. Despite feeling alone during that period, Vivek found strength in his relationship with Vishwa, standing firm in his commitment.
Looking ahead, Vishwa and Vivek aspire to continue growing together, advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, and fostering a loving and inclusive family. Their vision extends to a more accepting society that celebrates love in all its forms.
