Long-distance relationships have become much easier to deal with thanks to modern technology. You can always WhatsApp your partner or FaceTime with them or get on a Skype call. Gone were the days when people waited for letters to arrive in the post and photographs of your long-distance lover were carefully stored in a tin box.
But, even with modern communication, it still does get hard especially on those lonely nights alone at home when insomnia strikes. You do miss having someone to physically hold on to. Though some celebrities like Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas have the funds to fly all across the world every 10 days so that they can see each other, us mere mortals are less lucky. We have to depend on other ways to communicate and when loneliness strikes, there is always “senti” music.
We’ve already compiled a list of the best Hindi songs to listen to when you’re in a long-distance relationship, so we’re going to give you five of the best English songs to listen to when you’re missing your boo.
1. One Call Away – Charlie Puth
First up, Charlie Puth is so cute and he plays the piano like a maestro. So when he sings, “I’ll be there to save the day, I’m only one call away”, you can feel your heart melting into a puddle.
This song is a good pick-me-up when you’re feeling particularly hopeless about being in an LDR. The catchy beat and the positive lyrics–“No matter where you go,
You know you’re not alone”–will get you back to realising that love is worth the pain of being far away from each other.
2. Lucky – Jason Mraz featuring Colbie Caillat
I was 16 when I first heard this song. I had just returned from camp in England where I met a boy who I thought was my “true love”. The glitch? He lived in Curacao, an island in the Caribbean. We managed to keep the relationship going for about two years after that by communicating on everything from MSN Messenger to MySpace (this was before Facebook and WhatsApp).
Then, one day, he emails me this song and I cried tears of happiness, love, and pain. The lyrics just punch you in the gut, “Boy I hear you in my dreams | I feel your whisper across the sea | I keep you with me in my heart |You make it easier when life gets hard”. Guess what? It’s 12 years down the line, we’ve both moved on, but we’re still great friends. But, whenever I hear this song, I remember how two kids managed to be in love for two years without meeting each other–all thanks to music.
So, if you’re feeling like you cannot handle the long bouts of separation in an LDR, give this song a listen.
3. Home – Michael Bublé
This one is a must for those of you who have it all–great job, amazing apartment, wonderful friends–but your special someone is in another city. While you know you should be grateful for the blessings you have, sometimes you can’t help but feel like home is not where all the success is, it’s where your partner is.
“Another aeroplane | Another sunny place | I’m lucky I know | But I want to go home.” These words just hit right in the feels.
4. You Are Not Alone – Michael Jackson
“But you are not alone | I am here with you | Though we’re far apart | You’re always in my heart | But you are not alone.”
The King of Pop knew what he was talking about when he sang this song. These lyrics express exactly what makes LDRs especially hard–the feeling of being alone even though you technically have a partner. In times when you’re feeling so alone and you feel like you need a hug but your SO is far away, it’s always good to remember that they are always in your heart even if not right in front of you.
5. Right Here Waiting – Richard Marx
No LDR playlist is complete without this utterly cheesy song. A ’90s hit that made everyone whose lover is far away croon its lyrics, this song has overshadowed all other hits by Richard Marx.
“Wherever you go | Whatever you do | I will be right here waiting for you | Whatever it takes | Or how my heart breaks | I will be right here waiting for you”–if this isn’t motivation, I don’t know what is. This is a declaration of unconditional love for your long-distance boo. It doesn’t matter where they are or what they do or say, you will be faithfully waiting for them to come running back into your arms.
Here’s to all the people in long-distance relationships all over the world, your bravery and dedication is commendable! We salute you for it.
