Breakups are tough! Even Bollywood stars like Shahid Kapoor have experienced its bitterness and came out stronger than ever. In a recent interview, he spoke his heart out about his past relationships, breakups, and how they affected him in general.

In a chat with Raj Shamani on his YouTube channel, Shahid said that sometimes, when one goes through a heartbreak, you lose sight of right and wrong and chase them so much you end up losing your dignity and feeling you are not good enough. He also said that the realisation of what you were doing hits you much later. Shahid’s experiences with heartbreaks may resonate with a lot of people, especially if it’s a messy, one-sided breakup.

He said, “Sometimes you love someone so much that when they reject you, you chase them to a degree that you start losing your dignity. You sacrifice your dignity and you don’t even realise that you have lost your self-respect in the process, and that realisation happens much later and you think, ‘What was I doing?”

Shahid said heartbreaks can help you realise what type of a partner you can tolerate

When asked what he learnt from these experiences, Shahid said that it is only after a heartbreak that one figures out “what kind of partner you can tolerate.” He meant that heartbreaks and breakupscan help you find the one who is the most suitable for you. It can help you avoid people who are just not right for you. He elaborated by saying that you find out during tough times who brings out the best or worst in you.

Shahid said that heartbreaks help“you decide who you want to become, and if it hasn’t helped you decide who you want to become, then you have wasted the opportunity, or you have not gotten anything good out of it.”

He added, “Because falling in love with someone is different, but you need to understand if they are bringing the best or worst out of you because eventually, you have to live with yourself.

“One should not be needy of something from the other person”: Shahid Kapoor

Shahid made an excellent point about expectations in relationships, and how to gauge it if the person isn’t right for you. He said that if you demand things from your partner believing it’s your right but your partner gets pressurised, you need to reconsider.

He said, “You think it’s your right, but if it was your right, you would have gotten it.”

Talking about neediness and expectations in a relationship, Shahid said it is very selfish to consider only your needs when it comes to partnership. You should not enter into a relationship thinking you need something from your partner.

He explained, “What I have learnt from love is that one should not be needy of something from the other person. That’s a very selfish reason to want to find love. ‘I am needy, I need to be comforted, I need to be made to feel like I am so important, I can’t see beyond this person’, all of this is selfish. We all want that love and attention but eventually, you should be able to give in a relationship. You should be able to be the giver.”
