Kabir Bedi’s autobiography Stories I Must Tell: The Emotional Life has received rave reviews. Recently, his granddaughter Alaya F hosted an Instagram live session to celebrate the success of his book and touch on various aspects of his life. It was quite a rollercoaster! The actor was candid about his parents’ marriage, his relationships, broken marriage, his son Siddharth Bedi’s suicide, his acting career including his Hollywood stint, and a few blunders he’s made.

And, of course, given his own life experiences when it comes to love and relationships, he did have some expert and cautionary advice for his doting granddaughter.

Stressing on modern day relationships, he advised Alaya, “What I want to say to you and your generation is that the two most important decisions you’ll have to make in your life is who will be your partner and how you’ll make your living. Who’s going to be the mother and father of your children? These are vital decisions.”

Their conversation got a bit more real and relatable when he pointed out how we are blinded by love and overlook flaws. He elaborated, “Now, a lot of people make decisions on who to marry when they’re very emotional and in love. But when you fall in love, your faculties aren’t fully at work. That’s one of the tricks that nature plays on us. Nobody makes a checklist and says that when I fall in love, I’m going to go back to this checklist and see whether this person added up to who I had in mind.”

Talking about how men and women approach relationships with a preconceived notion, he said, “There’s a saying: women marry men thinking they’ll change and men marry women thinking that they won’t change! And they do.”

Kabir also opened up about his biggest regret of not being able to spend enough time with his kids, “Whenever there’s a divorce it’s always a tragedy and the biggest sufferers are the children. One of my great regrets is that I couldn’t give enough time to Pooja and Siddharth, but then that’s what happens in divorces. So I tried to make it up by having the best time I could with them when they came to America.”
