A bad relationship is like an ill-fitting dress. You can choose to wear it if you want, but that’s not going to stop it from highlighting your supposed flaws. That, in reality, is simply bad tailoring. When you’re stuck in a relationship that is toxic and unfulfilling, sometimes, you can turn into a person that you, yourself can’t seem to recognize. It brings out the very worst in you – for little or no fault of your own.
If you can relate to finding yourself in such a situation, here’s what you can do to avoid the bitter and simply be better…
1. Refuse to get into verbal spats
In life, it’s important to choose your battles. If you know the outcome of a heated argument is going to be an impasse, then it’s in yours, and your partner’s, best interest to not give into it. Sometimes silence is golden and speaks louder than any words ever will.
2. Identify the problem accurately
If you can pinpoint exactly what’s driving you to a point of breaking down in a relationship, it’ll be a huge help. It’s only then that you’ll be able to look for valuable solutions, instead of being scattered mentally and shooting in the dark.
3. Stay away from people that awake your inner beast
Though this might be easier said than done, it’s important to recognise the people in your life who bring out the worst in you. If you find this to be your own partner – then that’s already a major red flag that screams: “You’re in the wrong relationship!” Healthy love brings out the very best in you and encourages you to be the best version of yourself.
4. Discuss your concerns with your partner
A lot of times, relationships take a huge hit because of gaps in communication. Egos, fear, guilt – they get the better of us and instead of addressing an issue, we often end up sweeping it under the carpet. If something is making you uneasy or unhappy, don’t refrain from bringing it up with your better half. You never know, sometimes a little talking can fix everything!
5. Displace the anger
While it’s important to address the cause of your anger and discontentment that’s turning you into an unrecognizable monster, it’s also imperative that you don’t let that consume you and take over your being. No matter how hard things get, try to dedicate an hour or two in the day to aligning your thoughts and finding balance. Whether it’s a hard session at the gym, a yoga class, or simply taking time off to write or paint – just do it.
