If movies are anything to go by, developing romantic feelings for your best friend is not a rare thing. Be it My Best Friend’s Wedding or closer home, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, girls fall in love with their closest buddies, and then go crazy trying to assess whether or not confessing is a good idea.

Evaluate Things First

For the record, the consensus is not to do so! According to popular opinion, it’s in your interest to move on from this emotion and keep this great news to yourself, because it’s bound to cause nothing but trauma to the friendship. It’s basically the theory that the pain of losing your best friend outweighs that of missing out the chance that they will reciprocate. But is this plan that easy to carry out? Hell no!

So now you’re stuck between honouring romance and what you feel, and being a potential risk to a friendship that means the world to you. Life’s a soup and you’re a fork. Where does one go from here? Well, here’s what to do at this point: Ask yourself these two questions – “How do I know this is romantic love?” and as we mentioned above, “Is the benefit of telling someone bigger than the loss of losing them?”

Introspect A Little

While answering the first, be as honest as you can with yourself and introspect whether it is just a need for temporary attention. Are you displacing some other feelings for another person? Can you really see them as a romantic partner? If you find yourself second-guessing  the answers and feeling a sense of discomfort when you think about yourself as your best friend’s “girlfriend,” abort the mission!

While answering the second question, it all boils down to whether you’re ready to take that risk. If you’ve picked up on signs that show he may be interested in something more than just friendship too, we’d say it’s worth the shot. But if you know at the back of your head that your confession might just throw him off guard and put him in a spot, and the balance may lean towards him not feeling the same, it’s probably a bad time.

Don’t Be Impulsive

Today, we live in a fast-paced world. We’re barely out of one relationship when our right swipes take us towards the other. Our emotions feel like a moving target, and we’re ruled by impulses, indecisiveness and FOMO, a combination as lethal as it gets. If for no other reason, it’s important to consciously slow down, evaluate certain things and then make an informed decision.

Unconditional and true friendship is hard to come by and so is that kind of love. If you find both in the same person you’re lucky, but even just the former is not a bad deal. While it’s important to follow your heart, sometimes it’s advisable to take your brain with you.
