I Don’t Buy Gifts For My Bae On V-Day. Does That Make Me Love Him Any Less?

Valentine’s Day is boring. I may sound old school, but Valentine’s Day never really excited me. But does that make me any less of a romantic? I don’t buy flowers or gifts for my significant other, and neither does he, for me. I have known my partner for four years, and we’ve been  married for a year now. Even the brand-new first year of marriage has failed to inspire me to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Though, I do pull his leg as the time inches near and ask him: “So… what are you getting me for Valentine’s Day?”. His response: “Nothing!”. We both share a pretentious wary look and burst into laughter the next very minute. If I say we consider each day of our lives to be Valentine’s Day, it would be a lie–because that’s not how the real world works. Everyday CAN’T be Valentine’s Day. You go through a roller coaster of emotions every day, and probably just focus on being nice to each other as much you can.

That said, there are a whole lot of reasons to not celebrate Valentine’s Day. Here are just a few of them:

1. Gifts are timeless

If I like something for him, I wouldn’t wait for Valentine’s Day. It’s absolutely illogical. Gifts anytime around the year would be as special for my partner; and a specific day dedicated to love would not make it extra special for him. Except for anniversaries or birthdays, of course.

2. Love is not just about romance

Believe it or not, couples do get a little more mushy and romantic around the Valentine’s week. But love is a process, and needs to be spontaneous–not practiced and prepared on a given date. It’s just a day like any other normal day. So, stop obsessing over it!

3. I never had to bother about having a date on Valentine’s Day

There were days where I saw peeps around me stressing over not having a date on Valentine’s Day, and how lonely they would feel. On the other hand, I would sit on my bed, binge watch a series, and hog on chocolates. Now, that’s a solid plan.

4. Stuffed toys are annoying

Does anyone still love those tacky red stuffed toys, and the teddy bears holding hearts? Nothing gets lamer than that! Huge teddy bears, those unnecessary over-priced red roses, and those extra-sweetened chocolates. Argh… gimme a break!

5. Because date nights are not just about candle-lit dinners

Candle-light dinners are overrated. Why choose a specific date to do that? Dinner dates are beyond that or holding hands. For us, every time we explore a new restaurant or a try a new dish is what love is all about. I don’t need one special day in February to do that!
