In the past 8 months, most of us have found a silver lining in our own sweet time. Mommies will
agree – all the stay-at-home time has helped them bond with their kiddos, spend
more time together, and make heartwarming memories along the way.
One of the favourite mommy-munchkin pastimes
to have emerged in the last few months is – cooking together! Dolling up in
aprons, ready to cook and bake with the mini-chefs is fun, however, the mess
created in the kitchen- not so much fun.
So if you’re tired of scrubbing grease and stains
after a cooking sesh with the kids, here are some tips for keeping your kitchen
spick and span throughout:
1) Cover The Work Surface
Rule no. 1 when cooking with a kid is to cover
your work station – it can be with kitchen paper, wax paper, butter paper, or
an old towel even. The aim is to avoid the oil splash, buttery fingers or
batter even to spill on the slabs.
2) Prepare The Ingredients Beforehand
Kids aren’t known for their patience skills –
and that’s why we recommend you to get done with all the chopping, mixing,
making sauces and curries before they join the easier half of the cooking process.
Trust me, you don’t want to mash the tomatoes and chop the onions in their
presence – that’ll be one messy and cranky experience.
3) Stock Up On Wipes
Be prepared for your kid to dunk
his hands in the batter and then rub his/her cheek with it! In short – you will
need wipes (lots of wipes!) for a hassle-free cooking experience with the kids.
4) Keep A Kitchen Cleaner Handy!
Let’s be practical – no matter how many precautions you take, there will be that one stain on the tiles or slabs or hob that needs cleaning. In times like these, I swear by my kitchen companion Mr Muscle – an all-round kitchen cleaning expert. All it takes is to spray this cleaner, and you can wipe all the grease and grime clean. I also use it for the chimney and even the microwave. It is very easy and convenient for everyday use- just spray and wipe and you are done.
We also feel that you should strive to lead by
example. A kid learns best from watching – so cleaning the utensils on the go,
wiping the slabs frequently, and leaving no dirty dishes on the counter will go
a long way in teaching your kids how things roll in a healthy kitchen.
