Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan are the embodiment of marital success. Marrying against the will of their parents back in 1992 when SRK was just starting off in an unknown industry, the couple have survived all the odds and dodged every scandal successfully to become synonymous with all that is inspiring about real-life Bollywood romance.

As the couple completes 30 years of being together, there are many lessons we can learn from their journey. From meeting at the age of 18 to crafting an empire together, here are seven quotes by the couple that prove teenage love can last a lifetime.

1. His greatest qualities

In an ‘Ask Me Anything’ session on Twitter, a fan asked SRK what Gauri loves most about him. He replied, “That I cook and clean and look after the babies. And I guess being so handsome helps too.” We’d love to have the superstar doing the same things for us too!

2. When SRK joked about his intolerance

Shah Rukh has always identified himself as a liberal. However, in an old interview with actor Farida Jalal, he joked about his own wedding reception during which he had asked Gauri to dress in a burqa and read the namaz. He went on to add, “So, I had a lot of fun, but the lesson in all this was that one respects religion but it should not come in the way of love.”

3. When he described his perfect Sunday with his wife

In the same throwback video, SRK is also seen admitting how he enjoys spending lazy Sundays with Gauri.

“First thing I hear as soon as I get up is a scolding from my wife, about how much I’ve worked for the past six days, and that I’ve barely been home and not given her any attention. When I tell her, look Gauri, I’m very tired, she snaps saying, ‘Nothing! I don’t want to hear anything.’ When she stops scolding, I look at her with dreamy eyes, and tell her how beautiful she looks. As soon as I say that, she says that I also look very tired. After that I’m king, I don’t shower at all on Sundays. I don’t bathe at all on Sundays. I stay in bed, eat chips. The TV is turned on, I watch a film,” he added.

4. That time Gauri revealed their initial struggles

In an interview with NDTV last year, the producer and interior designer revealed how their transition into superstar life was a gradual shift.

“Frankly I did not realise even after his films released, even after he gave those blockbusters. Took a long, long time for it to sink in that he had arrived and it was very organic, gradual. It wasn’t like I woke up one fine day in this place and said ‘Wow, he has arrived’. It wasn’t like that. It was his struggle…we went through ups and downs. He has accomplished so much and done so well for himself.. all of us are enjoying his hard work today,” she said.

5. Gauri’s go-to guide

In an interview with HT Cafe, Gauri revealed that she would often seek her husband’s advice on designs and aesthetics.

“I must say that he’s been a great support. Shah Rukh is very talented with design and he is extremely creative. In fact, I discuss work with him off and on, and our conversations are always fruitful,” Gauri added.

6. When Shah Rukh was scared for Gauri’s health

During her first pregnancy with Aryan, Gauri was not in the best of health. In an interview with Rediff back in 1998, SRK had disclosed his fear of hospitals.

“I’ve lost my parents in hospitals—so I don’t like being in hospitals. And Gauri is quite fragile—and I’ve never seen her fall really sick, or seen her unwell. When I saw her in the hospital, they had put in tubes and stuff. And she was becoming delirious and she was really cold. I went with her to the operation theatre for her Caesarean… And (takes a deep breath) I thought she’d die. Didn’t even think about the kid at that point in time. It wasn’t important to me,” said the 55-year-old actor.

7. The mantra for a successful marriage

While speaking to the Hindustan Times, Gauri was asked the key to a successful marriage. The 51-year-old answered, “We both are very easy going people. He doesn’t question me about too many things, and he also stays busy with his work. I think when people spend all their time together is when trouble starts brewing. I love the fact that he gives me my space, and I make sure I give him his.”
