A Letter To My Mom, Without Whom I May Not Have Survived The Pandemic

Dear Mom,

In February 2020, I was detected with a relapsed auto-immune disorder affecting kidneys, that I thought I had left behind in 2007. In March 2020, the pandemic struck and changed the world as we know it. Coronavirus being an immunity-attacking disease was terrible news for me. If it wasn’t for you mom, your tension-fuelled proactivity and truckloads of love, I would probably not have survived the most difficult year of my life.

Today, as I write this, it is easy to see why they say we don’t deserve mothers. They do too much, they expect too little and to be honest, that’s unfair AF. Being a patient in a worldwide pandemic can be a nerve-wracking experience. Especially now when the healthcare system in the country is experiencing the highest caseloads, infrastructural failure and acute oxygen shortages. The fear of catching the virus is constant, the fear of what comes after in my condition, crippling. Yet, my mother held it all together. She was there each day, not just as someone who reminds you about your medicines, takes you for all of your doctor visits or patiently waits for you to destress after a panic attack, but as someone who never takes any credit for it. Thank you for all of it! I honestly don’t know how I would have done it without you.

While I know that the gratefulness is hardly verbally expressed, it exists in unquantifiable amounts within me. I understand the sacrifices, the unexpected financial crunch, the always-smiling attitude does not come easy– especially seeing your own daughter suffer under tons of strong medicines and regular injections, but you did it and so effortlessly. I have thrown my tantrums in the past year ( and several before that as well) and you’ve always found a hatke way to deal with it. Thank you for the life lessons, parenting lessons and masterclass on being annoying—thank you for being you because without it, I wouldn’t be me!

As we continue our battle against COVID-19, let’s take a moment to celebrate and express our love for our pillars of strength, our refuge in this storm—our mothers! This Mother’s Day, iDiva’s writers pen special tributes to their mothers and the beautifully complex relationship that exists between a mother and her daughter. Here’s wishing a very happy Mother’s Day to all!
