Through my own experience, I can safely declare that the following communication methods are tried and tested. Not only have they aided me in strengthening my three year-long relationship but they have also helped me make an Irish exit out of uncomfortable situations.

If I’ve accurately described your life too, how many of the following strategies have you personally practised?

1. Code words

Couples love assigning code words. Not only is it fun to have a couples-only joke but it’s unsuspected by other people. Code words are like safe words—for sex, for leaving a party, for responding to your mother-in-law—just about everything.

2. Nods and stares are everything

When you find a couple intensely staring at each other across the room, rest assured that they’re having a legit conversation. For couples, each nod and stare has a different meaning that is only understood by them. It comes in handy for signalling across the room during parties, social gatherings etc.

3. Talking through memes and emojis

We committed people can talk to our significant others via emojis and memes for days. Who needs real communication when there’s a meme for that?

4. Passive-aggressive gestures

Committed people love getting triggered and I know this from personal experience. A lot of times in a relationship, communication is only established through small acts of pettiness—like sending screenshots of a girl your partner has liked, keeping the towel on the bed after showering or eating noisily on purpose. There’s no real interaction here but the message is sent, loud and clear.

5. Silence

And finally, absolute silence! If you’re not comfortable in each other’s silences, we’ve got some bad news for you fam!
