Although the notion of showering together paints a magical thought in your head, there are many inevitable facets that could turn it into an awkward encounter. So, when it comes to couple showers, do not leave everything to the imagination since blissful unawareness will not do you any favours here.

Be prepared for these five things that are completely unromantic and hairy (no pun intended!).

1. To pee or not to pee

Showering together may sound romantic, but truth be told — romance cannot defy the laws of biology. It’s pretty common knowledge that the urge to pee catalyses rapidly when you hear a stream of water or lay in a bathtub. A romantic shower can turn awkward pretty quickly when you battle a torturous urge to answer nature’s call.

2. Chews up on your ‘me time’

Particularly if you are living with your partner or spouse, the need for personal space becomes key. Your partner and you see each other plenty, and truthfully, you wouldn’t mind spending a few minutes alone with your thoughts. Showers are a great way to unwind and revel in your own company. It’s almost therapeutic. Hence, showering together frequently could get pretty old quickly.

3. Different temperature preferences

Too hot or too cold? It’s no picnic setting the optimum temperature of your shower every morning. You do not want to scald yourself or give a freezing shock to your body. Imagine when you decide to finally take your relationship to the next level (ahem! bathroom) and fail to get that right, it will royally throw you off your game.

Pro tip: Adjust the water’s temperature beforehand.

4. Narrow shower streams

Most shower heads are built to cover one person. It could get awkward pretty quickly when you’re standing outside the stream and shivering to death. Also, narrow shower streams do not do any favours in couple showers. You’re compelled to take shower afterwards anyway. So, get a wider shower head or keep your relationship out of the bathroom for a while.

5. The mess is real

What they do not show you in perfectly crafted and choreographed romantic sequences of showering together in movies is the amount of mess it creates afterwards. Particularly if you’re compulsive about cleanliness and orderliness, couple showers may not be your cup of tea. If you are still willing to go ahead with it, prep yourself for a round of rigorous cleaning sesh in the bathroom.
