Grandmas are the sweetest and the most-incredible women we know. If you have grown up with your grandparents, you must have had the best time ever. Especially, with your grandma–because she’s the best mate you’ll ever have. Every time we faced punishment from mummy-papa, she came to our rescue. Not only do grandmothers love their grandkids the most, but they also pamper you to the fullest. Be it cooking your favourite dishes or narrating stories until you fall asleep–grandmas make the most impact in our lives. They also impart important life lessons. Here’s what my grandmom taught me while I was growing up:

1. Follow your heart

Indian middle-class parents are obsessed with making their child ‘the best’ in everything. In that race, they often overlook the talents their kids were born with. They almost always can’t see how well you sing, and often overlook your aesthetic sense. But not your grandma, nope! She’s the only person who nurtures your talents. She lets you be free because she can sense what makes you the happiest. My grandmother taught me to be strong, opinionated, and follow my heart.

2. Family values

Our family values and principles are always passed down to us by our grandparents. My grandma would often tell me stories that taught me a lot about respect, morality, honesty, hard work, and kindness. I try my level best to follow these lessons in my daily life, and that makes my life much simpler and worth living.

3. True love

Although I struggled quite a lot in love, my grandma always believed that I would find my “Prince Charming” one day. I would often laugh, but her conviction was unshakable. Now, when I am happily married–I just can’t thank her enough for having faith, even when I didn’t.

4. Teaching languages

My grandma was my first teacher, and she taught me different languages. She taught me how to read and write in my mother tongue, Bengali. She would often read newspapers out loud and help me understand what those printed words meant.

5. Always make time for your parents

More than anything else, my grandma taught me the importance of having someone who loves you unconditionally in your life. No matter where you go in life and how busy you get, always find time for your parents and grandparents as they are the only truth in your life. Always remind them how much you value and love them. These small gestures will take you higher in life.
