Though we see why it could be somewhat “embarrassing” to call your mother your best friend when you’re in school or college, as you grow up, you begin to realise how special it is to share such a beautiful friendship with her. All that shame you felt, soon turns to pride.
Growing up, I often heard my friends talk about how cool it would be, if they lived away from home – without a nagging mom telling you what to do, asking you where you’re going, and taunting you about your bad food habits. I couldn’t relate. I had the best time with my mother, and if I could, I would take her with me wherever I went. Call me lucky or blessed, I found a friend in my mother. Someone I could tell anything, discuss anything with. She’s my biggest cheerleader and best mentor. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who feels this way! If your mom is your BFF, here are 10 things you’ll totally relate to:
1. There’s more love than fear
Although my mother is strict when necessary, it’s not the kind of discipline that instills fear.Kids are often petrified to own up to a mistake or ask if it’s okay to go out to a party. If your mom is your BFF, the relationship won’t give you stress, or induce panic – it’s more about respect, and there’s always room for free communication.
2. She parties with you
Partying with your mom is one of the coolest experiences ever. The joy of just being able to let loose, dance, sip on a Cosmo or two with a parent, is unbeatable!
3. She’s your favourite shopping buddy
Personally, there’s no better shopping partner for me than my mother. It’s either me going solo, or a date with my mom at the mall! She’s patient, she’ll give you honest opinions on clothes, she remembers if you already have a similar top to the one you’re about to purchase – what’s not to like?
4. She’s your free therapist
No one knows your heart like the woman who gave birth to you. If you and your mom share a good bond, just like me, you’ll be able to sit and discuss anything under the sun with her. Besides, moms make the best listeners and have the greatest advice and life hacks!
5. She will stand up for you
Hell hath no fury like a mother whose daughter is hurt! Your mom is equivalent to an entire army, when it comes to fighting for you. Just like you’d expect your BFF to do, if you’re ever in a situation that requires back-up – you know who you can bank on!
6. She’s your biggest fan
There ain’t a cheerleader as good as your mom! Even if you’re absolutely shit at something, or dress yourself up to look like a mess, she’ll make you feel like you’re the best, most capable person on the surface of the Earth. And everyone could do with that kinda pep talk, right?
7. You don’t need to talk to communicate
Whether it’s at a family function or at a dinner, when your mom gives you “the look,” you know exactly what she’s thinking, what she means and how to execute the plan – if there is one! Similarly, she knows your movements and can read your body language too.
8. You’ll share secrets that no other family member knows
If your mom is your BFF, the two of you are probably each other’s sound boards and secret keepers. Whether it’s from your dad or your grandmother – there’s bound to be some stuff that only remains between you and her.
9. Gossip sessions that are as good as spa sessions
If there’s anyone I can tolerate on the phone, for more than 15 minutes – it’s got to be my mother! From bitching about relatives we hate, to people who have been pests; there are only a few things in life that can be as pleasurable as gossiping with your mom.
10. She drops truth bombs that you can’t deny
If your mom is more of a friend to you, she’s bound to tell you exactly how she feels about the jerk you’re dating, the bad attitude that you are developing or the way you are neglecting important things. She won’t mince her words, and even though it might pinch sometimes, you know it comes from a good place.
