Ladies, if you share the details of your love life with your mom, raise your hand! Remember how you just wanted to run to her, hug her tight, and cry your heart out after that heartbreak? Even now, no matter how old you get, all you need is a hug from your mom to make everything better. All you want is to hear her say: “It’s alright beta! It happens. This is how you learn. Things will be fine and I love you! Why stress? I am there with you always na?”

You know your secrets, fears, and emotions are safe with her. You are not afraid of letting out your emotions to her. Your mom is your biggest critic and your biggest support as well. She’s your first best friend–perhaphs, the most dependable one a daughter can have. Her friendship doesn’t come with any terms and conditions and is the most selfless and unconditional bond you will ever have. She’s the one who taught you how to love and no one understands us better than she does. She knows you in and out and accepts you for your strengths and your weaknesses. The best part? Every time you run to her, she listens to you patiently and gives you the best advice. Here are some of the most unabashed and unapologetic relationship advice I have received from my mom:

1. Bury your past. We all have bitter experiences, do not let them grow on you.

2. Don’t ever let anyone dictate your life choices. You are special and deserve to be treated that way.

3. Initially, it will be a cakewalk. Then, reality will hit when you realise the honeymoon phase is over. Be prepared for it! Don’t let yourself live in la-la land.

4. Never leave home without sorting out an argument. Always leave home with a peaceful mind.

5. Never date a man who doesn’t respect his own family. If he can’t treat women in his family right, he will never treat you right either.

6. Marry a man who is as crazy for you, as you’re for him.

7. Nobody is perfect–everyone has flaws. It’s you who needs to decide whether you can live with those flaws or not. Some flaws are bearable and can be lived with, others will just make you suffer.

8. Don’t settle just because you have lost all hope. You are meant for better things in life, wait for the right person who will make you feel wanted.

9. Be sure of yourself. More than him, you need to be sure of whether you are ready to commit to him or not.

10. At times, you just need to let go and know it’s for your own good.
