The spine is not a muscle but we hope you know that you can give it healthy reinforcement by supporting it in certain ways. So, if you are deskbound for most of the day, you probably have droopy shoulders and a hunchback. But hey, here’s some good news: give yoga a go to straighten yourself out! We got fitness enthusiast and yoga expert Urmi Kothari to share some asanas to keep your spine strong and your posture correct.

Cobra pose

1. Bhujangasana or Cobra Pose

This extension warms up the body and strengthens the back muscles that hold the spine upright. It stretches the pectoral muscles and opens up the rib cage to improve breathing. It also allows energy to fill up the body to turbo-charge the day.

Here’s how to do the Bhujangasana.

cat stretch

2. The Cat Stretch

This asana mobilises the spine through its range of motion. The extensions warm up the spine; flexions have a calming effect on the body and mind. It helps you correct your posture and maintain it. Increase the pace gradually as you repeat the process for 10 minutes.

Here’s how to do the Cat stretch.

Child pose

3. Child’s Pose or Balasana

This pose is also known as the resting pose in yoga. All you need to do is sit back on your heels and reach your arms out in front of you or bring them alongside the body towards your feet into a tiny little yoga ball. This pose stretches your spine and strengthens it while helping you improve your posture.

Here’s how to do Child’s Pose.

Tadasana

4. Tadasana or the Mountain Pose

This pose requires you to stand tall to maintain the alignment of your body. It’s a great asana to correct your posture. But holding this posture for too long can be challenging as it requires you to use your entire body so it’s best to take it slow.

Here’s how to do Tadasana.
