What Exactly Are Kegels, And How To Fit Them Into Your Busy Schedule

Kegels, not diamonds, should be every woman’s best friend. “Do some kegels” is the pop culture fitness advice that every woman receives at some point, and most often, it is when she’s prepping for date night, and hoping for the big-O. Yep, kegels DO make orgasms easier to achieve, and much more satisfactory. But, that’s not the only benefit of this exercise that you can do basically anytime you want. Kegels essentially work your pelvic floor muscles, and strengthening these muscles prevent POP (pelvic organ prolapse) – a condition where a woman’s vaginal tissue begins to droop. As you grow older, the muscles all over your body begin to get weaker. This, of course, includes your pelvic floor muscles. If you plan to have a child through natural delivery, strengthening this set of often ignored muscles becomes all the more important. Another benefit which many women are aware of is that it improves bladder control.

Now that you know why you should do kegels, here’s a how to do it: The first step is to identify the set of muscles that you need to work. Next time you have to pee, try and engage the muscles you would, in order to hold your pee. Those are the ones. Now, to practice kegels, engage these muscles and hold for a 3-count, and then release for 6. Don’t do this when you have to pee, though! 10 reps of this is one set of kegels. Work your way up to holding the muscles for a longer count, maybe 8 to 10. According to WebMD, the recommended dose is three times a day. Sounds simple enough, right?

The beauty of kegels is that you can literally do it anywhere, anytime! This is one exercise that no woman is ever too busy for! Not sure what we mean? Here are just a few times when you can do this wonderful muscle contraction-release exercise.

You get the drift, right? 3 times a day, every day… basically anytime you want! I am doing kegels as I write this!
