Alia Bhatt is at an unusual juncture. One of her career’s most-defining films, Brahmastra, releases in two weeks. At the same time, her pregnancy has not only ensured additional media glare on the actress, but also made way for a harsher degree of trolling.

In the most recent episode, Alia was subjected to criticism over her pink and black maternity outfit. At a time when the actress is going through her very public pregnancy, should we, as society, be tearing her down for her choice of clothing? Here’s our two cents.

What Alia choose to wear for ‘Brahmastra’ promotions and why are people dissing it

Alia’s maternity fashion has mostly deflected towards breezy silhouettes and breathable options. For a recent outing forpromoting Brahmastra, the 29-year-old stepped out in a ruffled fuchsia blouse paired with a black waistcoat and trousers.

Styled by Anaita Shroff Adjania, the outfit’s sheer element showed Alia’s baby bump. To complete the look, the actress slipped into a pair of kitten heels.

Although the outfit does not push the boundaries of fashion, it does not deserve to be torn down, a route most trolls are taking online. Anonymous Instagram critic Diet Sabya added to the brewing narrative by sharing Alia’s latest look, along with the caption, “Ya, it’s not working at all.”

An anonymous account critiquing someone’s sartorial choices might be entertaining for viewers, but does it not further normalize the hatred? If one did, in fact, dislike the outfit, looking away is also a viable option.

Why we need to refrain from spewing more hatred towards women

Alia has always taken the trolling in her stride, something she’s been facing ever since she faltered on Koffee With Karan many years ago. What we often forget about celebrities is that they’re human at the end of the day, and are entitled to their own mistakes—be it sartorially or as individuals.

Yes, they choose to be in the limelight due to their professions, but it does not justify the unnecessary hatred towards celebrities. Also, the next time you find yourself hating on a celebrity look, turn around and ask yourself this—have we not made similar faux pas? Have we not worn an outfit we later cringed over?

We are already too harsh on women. Perhaps it’s time we stopped it from becoming the norm.
