The FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week took place last week amid much fanfare. While we are soaking in all the buzz around the latest clothes and new trends heralded by one of India’s top fashion events, there’s another section of people online who were greatly occupied during the recently concluded event. Devoid of any interest in the clothes, these trolls were hating on women’s bodies and spewing unsolicited remarks on their ramp walk, clothes, bodies and even their age. On the receiving end this time were Malaika Arora and Anushka Ranjan.

The ageist comments on Malaika Arora bring out the ugly side of the internet

Fitness and fashion enthusiast Malaika Arora has earned the reputation of being one of the best-dressed ladies in India. So it’s only understandable that the top fashion designers in the country want her to be their muse. In fact, her latest showstopping moment for the clothing label Limerick by Abirr and Nanki is being touted as the best, with fashion critic Diet Sabya comparing it to that of global sensation Jennifer Lopez.

But instead of giving credit where it’s due, the keyboard warriors went about making ageist comments on the actor. Many even body shamed her, suggesting treatments she never asked them for. In fact, Malaika faces such body shaming and slut shaming almost every time she steps out.

Trolls think Anushka Ranjan is “manly” and not fit for the ramp

Most of these faceless trolls love hiding behind the anonymity of the online world but these days, people seem to be least bothered about being associated with the vile comments they make on social media. When Anushka Ranjan recently glided on the ramp in a sexy gold dress by designer Nikhita Tandon, we were in awe. But again, others were not impressed.

You may speak about the styling and the designs, not about our bodies!

Critiquing the outfit is one thing but when one is making vile remarks about women’s bodies, they are overstepping the line. A few of the uncouth remarks implied that Anushka is not “feminine” enough, reminding us once again that it’s about time people let women be. Let us decide what we want to wear and how we’d like to go about our lives, without the unnecessary hate, no?

So dear trolls, you’ve done your best but both the stunning ladies are still unbothered, are wearing their confidence on their sleeves and exuding a fierce attitude. It’s you who need to check the source of all this hate; women will not conform to your narrow ideals of beauty and femininity.

Sending you love, from Malaika, Anushka and all the women out there who decide to live life on their own terms.
