Women who enjoy (a few) whisky on the rocks, or chug down a couple of beers and still handle themselves like Goddesses have a special place in heaven! It’s annoying when people make snarky remarks on how women can’t seem to hold their alcohol as well as men. There have been so many occasions on which I’ve seen men sway from side to side, puking their guts out, while I wait outside the ladies washroom for my turn. Not a lot of people talk about instances like that the next day… but God forbid a woman gets a little tipsy and appears to lose her sense of surrounding – it becomes a hot topic, followed by a ridiculing session, some safety advice and SO much gyaan. But has that ever stopped us from catching the ‘Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main’ vibes? Hell no! The only reason why we’d even question a ‘bottoms up,’ is because we fear the evil hangover the next day. Not because of the naysayers! And for that too, today, we’re bringing you a complete guide. So girls, if you’re a chugger, who likes to indulge in some unapologetic fun every once in a while, here’s the only advice and information you’re ever going to need. Cancel out the hate and raise your glass – ‘Cause no cool story ever starts with someone eating a salad…

What causes a hangover?

To break it down for you simply, when we consume large amounts of alcohol, our liver can’t keep up. Acetaldehyde accumulates, causing nausea, vomiting, sweating and other unpleasant symptoms. The way your body breaks down alcohol may account for many of the above symptoms. Dehydration also plays a significant role in adding to the suffering during a hangover. Alcohol acts as a diuretic, causing people to urinate much more than usual. As a result, people who’ve drunk too much frequently wake up the next day with a dry mouth, terrible thirst, lightheadedness and a splitting headache.

How to avoid a hangover

Some easy and effective ways to prevent a hangover the next day are – Drink a lot of water in between your drinks, pop a ‘anti-hangover’ pill (easily available in stores) right before your first drink, munch on a burger instead of a salad while drinking (greasy food helps you metabolize your alcohol faster!), choose juice over soda mixers, and of course, dance it off!

How to cure a hangover

If for whatever reason, you forget to do the above, or skip it, here’s what you can do to cure your hangover…

3. Sleep it off

If you can, get enough sleep the day after all the fun and frolic. Alcohol consumption may interfere with sleep, and a lack of it could contribute to hangover symptoms such as fatigue, irritability and headaches. You definitely don’t want that!

4. Have a drink the morning after

Ever heard of the saying, “The only way to avoid a hangover is to stay drunk!” Well, that. If you’re a daredevil, pour yourself a drink the morning after and go glug-glug-glug! Drinking alcohol can prevent the conversion of methanol to formaldehyde, which could reduce some hangover symptoms.

5. Drink Responsibly

While we’re all for having a great time and doing exactly what you want to, it’s always important to take that with a sense of responsibility. Drink as much as you can handle… on the day and the next day! Just remember, that there are consequences to every action!
