The Classic Pubic Hair Debate: To Wax Or Sport A Full Bush?

Pubic hair has been the subject of debate for quite some time now, especially since there’s research to prove that it might not be the best option for your vajajay. Getting rid of the bush feels great and it is certainly an option more and more women are opting for today (hi, Brazilians!) And it’s not just waxing … you can shave, trim or simply use hair removal creams to clear the area and keep it clean. But should you really be getting rid of all of it in the first place? We spoke to an expert to address the matter so that you don’t have to …err… take your trimmer down there.

Dr Suman Lal, Senior Consultant,Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Max Hospital, Gurgaon says, “We cannot say whether it is good or bad. It depends on many factors like the method of hair removal, the reaction to certain skin types and other factors”.

Whether you get your bikini line (only the sides) done, or prefer a Brazilian wax or Hollywood (all clear) style, there’s more than one reason to reconsider getting rid of your pubic hair.

The facts

1. Pubic hair isn’t there so that you can get rid of it. It acts as a cushion and protects your lady parts against friction especially during rigorous sex.

2. The apocrine glands in our body secrete pheromones that contain an odourless substance that mixes with the bacteria from the oil that the sebaceous glands give off. These pheromones get trapped in pubic hair where they can enhance sexual awareness in others, and make people seem sexually desirable.

3. The natural oils in pubic hair keep the area lubricated.

4. Pubic hair also protects you against genitals warts and acts as a barrier against bacteria and yeast infections.

The troubles with removing it

1. Waxing down there is painful and can lead to saggy labia. If not done properly it can also result in an infection or breakouts which will be painful. “Waxing if not done by a competent person can be painful. So going to a good, hygienic salon with sterilised products or instruments, are the safest option,” explains Dr Lal.

2. Hair removal creams come with their own share of cons. “They can cause blackening of the pubic area, hardening of the hair roots and therefore it is a strict no-no, especially for women in their pregnancy,” emphasises Dr Lal.

3. Laser hair reduction is another option which isn’t totally reliable and comes with the risk of being exposed to radiation. Dr Lal says, “A lot of young girls in their early teens have got laser done which is too early. I have seen a couple of young girls post that, coming with their mothers for problems of swelling and pain as it can hamper the skin’s growth. If you want to do it then consider it in your later years”.

4. Shaving, on the other hand, can lead to blisters and pimples on the skin leaving it inflamed and in a bad condition. The boils can also leave behind scars.

5. “Trimming it at regular intervals and keeping it short is the best way to prevent any complications and unhygienic procedures,” shares Dr. Lal.
