Protein is an essential nutrient which helps build and repair muscles. It’s no wonder then that proteins bars have become the most convenient way to load up for many fitness enthusiasts. They are available in a variety of flavours and packaged in fancy wrapping that makes us want to hoard these miracle snacks up. But are they really worth your money? Here’s all that you need to know before you pick a protein bar up as a healthy snack substitute.

What are protein bars?

Protein bars contain high quality protein obtained from rich sources such as soy, milk and eggs, which are often used by fitness enthusiasts and athletes to build muscles. Vallari Shah, nutritionist and dietician at Godrej Tyson Foods Ltd. says, “Physical activities undertaken on a regular basis help in building strength and the warding off of chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, obesity, depression and osteoporosis. To achieve optimum strength, a well-balanced diet is essential, which means macronutrients like carbohydrates, proteins and fats must be taken in appropriate ratios”.

Vallari further adds “For muscle building, a good deal of protein consumption is essential. So high quality protein achieved from eggs, chicken and meat is a must. Protein bars are a substitute for this consumption. Individuals who take up endurance activities like running marathons, swimming, gymnastics require a certain amount from protein as per their body weight”.

The pros

According to Vallari, “They are protein-rich snacks that contribute essential amino acids to your diet and help build muscle mass, repair wounds and damaged tissues, manufacture hormones and enzymes, and synthesise immune and red blood cells”. There’s also no need to refrigerate or specially prepare them as they come in ready-to-eat form and make excellent on-the-go snacks to keep you satiated for a while.

The cons

Protein bars are available in various flavours making them no less than a delicious dessert. But that’s also where the trouble begins. Some protein bars contain sugar, which is derived from natural sources such as fruits and dates, which are healthy and also improve your fitness levels. But some bars may have added sugar and preservatives, which makes this a not-so-healthy snack, thereby adding up unwanted calories. Many protein bars even contain alcohol as sweeteners, which can cause bloating, flatulence and diarrhoea. Protein bars, however healthy, cannot replace all the nutrients that the body gets from whole foods. Also, one needs to keep in mind that relying too much on these bars can lead to a low intake of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, fiber and heart-healthy fats, which are in abundance in natural foods. While protein bars are quick and convenient, they can be quite an expensive investment. So remember that whatever your reason may be for choosing a protein bar, make sure it’s a wise decision.
