Indian women are all too aware of the taboos related to menstruation. From not being allowed into temples to not touching the pickle, women have a string of restrictions imposed on them by family members and the rest of society during their periods. A majority of our population still believes that a woman’s menses is a dirty thing! Well, it’s time to break that notion and the students of Delhi University are here to do just that.

Earlier, it was the students of Jamia Milia Islamia University who created awareness about menstruation by posting sanitary pads with slogans written on them. The campaign created quite a stir across the country as it went viral on social media. And then there was 15-year-old Rupi Kaur on Instagram talking about periods through pictures depicting blood stains, pads and more. Uncomfortable, but effective nonetheless!

This time it’s the students of Delhi University who want to send a message that menstruation is a natural process, not something to be ashamed of. What’s more, women need to be encouraged to live life as usual when on their period. With both girls and boys talking about the issue, it’s time we all stopped being embarrassed, don’t you think?

Sure the campaign name – Come and See the Blood on My Skirt – could have been better. But let’s look beyond that and focus on the cause. Kudos to these bold students who are not afraid to speak up and challenge age-old beliefs!
