Food safety in India continues to be a problem. A recent multi-city survey conducted by Research Pacific (commissioned by Tetra Pak) shows that almost 70 per cent of mothers aren’t too sure about the food that their child consumes.

With abundant food colouring and unsafe food packaging, one in every three mothers picks food options that aren’t following the government approved quality controls. The main reason behind this is lack of knowledge about food safety. Over 60 per cent of shoppers are not concerned about picking food based on safety criteria. Driven by the hypermarket culture and age old habits of buying vegetables from street vendors, not many people are aware about basic food safety criteria.

This is where we need a body to spread awareness and educate the Indian audience about food safety laws and how to make the correct choices.

Following up on their ‘Right to Keep Food Safe’ awareness campaign, Tetra Pak aims to educate mothers and banish myths about food habits in India. For example, six out of every 10 moms believe that boiling doesn’t harm the nutritional value of food, or most moms vouch for loose juices despite knowing that they might be unhygienic. The campaign aims to educate mothers about food safety and nutrition and motivate them to spread the word.

The first phase of the campaign, organising a food seminar, saw over 2000 participants across 10 cities enrolling for the Nutrition Quotient (NQ) certification course and ensuring that they make healthy food choices for their family.

The campaign sure is a healthy start to understanding about food safety laws. You too can make a difference and take a step towards the safety of your family.
