Janhvi Kapoor has been in the news ever since she started working in Bollywood. She began her film career with Dhadak in 2018, and is now promoting her fifth movie, Good Luck Jerry, which released last week. While one would think that all was perfect in her life, not everything has been so throughout her time in Bollywood.

Recently, the 25-year-old actor opened up about mental health issues, feeling “worthless” and how being her parents’ daughter affected her career.

Mental health issues are not reserved for a certain group of people; anyone can be facing them. Janhvi Kapoor opening up about anxiety while on the sets of Dhadak and her other early projects proves just that.

In a conversation with TV network B4U, the Roohi actor revealed that constantly being judged and evaluated gave her anxiety in her initial years in the industry. Due to constant comments about her upbringing and privilege, she was made to feel “worthless”.

She talked about how her self-confidence wavered in the beginning because of what people said about her: “During Dhadak and Gunjan [Saxena], a large part of my journey was dictated by [what people thought], because I feel very indebted to the opportunities I’ve gotten.”

She continued, “I’ve been made to think I got them very easily. Which I have. But I think that did trigger a sense of anxiety in me, or a sense of getting things I don’t deserve. Like I’m not worth the opportunities I’m getting…So I did take that pressure a lot.”

Janhvi’s journey through anxiety, self-worth, and confidence is proof that mental health does not discriminate. Anyone could be struggling with mental health issues, regardless of where they come from and we’d never know because things are not always what they seem on the surface.

A lot of actors get immense hate online, and have to deal with trolling, threats, and negativity. Needless to say, this affects their mental health too. After all, we’re all human at the end of the day.

Janhvi also responded to people saying that she got opportunities “because of her parents”, saying, “At the end of the day, the only thing I have in my hand is to enjoy what I’m doing and give it my best.”

There is no denying the fact that connections make it easier for industry insiders to work in films. However, being famous and coming from a film family doesn’t necessarily mean things are always hunky-dory.

In the interview, Janhvi also spoke about how she got the feeling that she had only become a part of projects because she was related to Boney Kapoor and Sridevi.

As per the actor, during her first movie as well as while filming for Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, she was made to feel as if she “got everything on a platter”, with people behaving as if  “[I] got things I don’t deserve, which means that I am technically worthless.”

However, she also clarified that it’s not her parents who made her choose this line of work: “I felt an overwhelming respect and love for my parents, and I am being given love and work because of that…”

She went on, “But the truth is that I love acting and I live for it. I work my ass off to give it back to them, for what they have done for me. I am doing what I do because of their love [sic].”

Janhvi might have been privileged growing up, but she did clarify that the fact is not lost on her. Addressing the life she comes from and the opportunities she got because of her parents, she said, “I do have respect for the fact that other people have lost out on the opportunity. [sic]”
